Running through menopause

I've done a thing! Asked 227 women how menopause was impacting their running and it made interesting reading!

Why I did this research
There is very little research on menopausal runners, so I wanted to contribute something practical and relevant.

What I found
I shared a survey on Facebook and received 227 responses in 4 days!

  • Many women reported low wellbeing scores

  • Injuries were very common

  • Strength training was often introduced after injury, not before

Key takeaways

  • Build strength training in early, not just when something goes wrong

  • Monitor total load (training + life stress + poor sleep all count)

  • Prioritise recovery, even when sleep is disrupted

  • Don’t ignore niggles—identify the cause and address them early

What this means in practice

If you’re a runner in midlife, a proactive approach matters:
strength, recovery, and load management are likely more important than simply adding more miles.
